Lesson Sequence
Hook / Warm-Up (8 min)
“Five years / ten years” quick-write: Where do you imagine yourself? What kind of work might you enjoy? No wrong answers.
Direct Instruction (12 min)
- Review interests, aptitudes, abilities and how they point toward career fields.
- Introduce a simple career pathway: interest → field → required education/training → entry job → growth.
- Model writing a SMART-style short-term goal (this year) and a long-term goal (after high school).
Guided Practice (18 min)
Students complete a Career Plan Map:
- A career field that interests me
- Why it fits my strengths
- Education/training it requires
- One short-term goal (this year)
- One long-term goal
Teacher conferences with students as they work.
Share & Feedback (8 min)
Partners exchange plans and ask one clarifying question each.
Closure (4 min)
Exit ticket: “One action I can take this month toward my goal is ___.”

Transitioning/Expanding (NYSESLAT Levels 3–4):
- Provide the Career Plan Map as a sentence-frame template
- Vocabulary: interest, aptitude, pathway, training, goal

- Extension: research one real program/credential for the chosen pathway
- Encourage precise career vocabulary
